Георг Гендель (Georg Friedrich Händel) родился 23 февраля 1685 г. в саксонском городе Галле (Halle). С семи лет активно занимался музицированием, с девяти — композиторской деятельностью. Свои первые оперы, «Амелия» и «Нерон», Гендель написал в 1705 г. В 1707—1709 г. композитор путешествует и учится в Италии, где к нему приходит слава мастера итальянской оперы. В 1710 г. он становится капельмейстером при дворе ганноверского курфюрста Георга, впоследствии ставшего королем Англии.
